Lakeside Mall, due to close on July 1, 2024, witnessed the rare bloom of a corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) last Sunday, drawing numerous enthusiasts due to its unique odor and rarity, blooming only once every 7-10 years. Chaos ensued when a hoax post from a purported mall employee claimed visitors could take any plants, leading to a crowd attempting to dig up the corpse flower. Mall security quickly intervened, turning people away. The post was later revealed to be a diversion by plant thieves who attempted to steal the prized flower amidst the confusion. Authorities are investigating the attempted theft, and mall management urged the public to disregard unauthorized information and cooperate with the investigation.
